THE WHARVES
-
The Wharves are a band that will take you away like a wave as they cover you in a sound that will soak your senses with rock, folk and psychedelic power. They create an original sound that is powerful and addictive. The band is based out of the UK with the members coming from France, Ireland and England. They include Marion Andrau on drums, Gemma Fleet on bass and Dearbhla Minogue on guitar and vocals. They formed in 2012. In 2013 they released a split LP with The Rosy Crucifixion on Glasgow's Soft Power Recordings and release a full length LP At Bay in 2014 with Nottingham's Gringo Records. At Bay features 13 tracks and was actually recorded in a bay on a boat where the studio was located inside of. Fleet said, “Our music is rock with elements of folk and psyche. The guitar playing is intricate the bass is catchy and the drums have power and emotion!” Our friend Rory Attwell records aboard Lightship95 moored on the Thames, it's a huge, beautiful old lightship. The owner Ben converted it from a hollow steel ship to a recording studio and living quarters pretty much single handedly. It was a great place to record and we loved the drunken feeling as the tide came in and swayed the boat as we recorded the songs."
The Wharves are recording a new record with plans for a release in March. “I've wanted to be in a band for as long as I can remember. My mum has a tape of Christmas songs that I got hold of and recorded over singing my own song right onto right in the middle of 'wonderful christmastime'. During adolescence I unsuccessfully tried to rope friends into playing music with me until eventually I joined a band through an online forum. I chickened out of the first meet up but the second one wasn't as awkward as I'd thought it would be and I have had a few bands since them. As a band our musical influences are very varied, we have a mutual appreciation for good songs though!”
In addition to recording and performing, Gemma says that the longevity of the band for three years is also a big accomplishment. “I think staying together for coming up to three years is an accomplishment in itself. In the UK it is very hard to do a band as a job unless you can support yourself financially. As a group we have managed to juggle full time day jobs, other musical projects, running a DIY venue, writing and training to be a lawyer with playing music together. Our immediate goal is to finish our second album, we are recording in March, it's the last session so we are looking forward to that. Beyond that who knows, to continue to have fun and travel a bit playing music is always good.”
“The songs tell stories with strong messages but don't always shout out the point directly so they might be misinterpreted. Additionally I think we have quite a full sound for a three piece, which people don't often expect. I can't speak for the others but for me it's everything and anything, sometimes an overheard conversation that I will hurriedly transcribe into my phone or maybe a general feeling or worry that I might vent with a story. The song 'Naz ' which is one of the songs we wrote together is about our guitarist Dearbhla's cat 'Naz' who one day decided she loved Dearbhla's house mate more and swanned off to his room and ignored Dearbhla for a while. Dearbhla thought it was amusing but a bit heartbreaking so we wrote a song together to console her.
Be sure to catch the tasty waves that The Wharves serve up and catch them on their debut LP. The band is riding a positive vibe with tour plans ahead this year. Gemma said that in addition to the album release they plan a UK tour and hope to tour in Eastern Europe as well with hopes of bringing their music to the United States as well.e played."
