Ashes Arise deliver powerful dark death metal music as the trio of Amy Zion, Stephanie Nolf and Emily Moss combine to create a force of music like no other with over the top guitar riffs and strong vocals.
The band formed in 2016 internationally as the band members met online and began with the ideas they had to create a metal band. Coordinating between France and the United States they overcame several barriers to complete the group and record an intense debut album Resurgence of Oblivion in 2017. Zion plays guitar, Nolf provides the bass, vocals and drums and moss leads the vocals and lyrics.
"We began collaborating in 2016 and began when I started seeking other female musicians to start a metal band together, said Amy. I had a lot of music written that I wanted to see brought into fruition. I sought out other serious like minded musicians and found the girls through online music forums and music pages. We have released our first album in 2017 and are gearing up to record our second album. Our mission in music is to do what we love to do with no boundaries, all the freedom and time we need to do what we love to do. Play metal! Ashes Arise is an all female melodic metal band with many different style influences. We are a band that has come together from different countries to make music we enjoy. We collaborate everything online." Stéphanie said, "I am playing music in metal bands since 1997 and never stopped since today. I can play and record bass, guitar, sing, program drums and compose songs and have learned everything by myself. I wanted to have a second band but only with female and it’s very difficult to find female metal musicians in my country (France) in that music style. This is why I searched in the whole world. We have made the whole album by ourselves from the beginning to it’s release only working online, having never met yet."
With one solid album already behind them the band look to continue to improve on what they have started and create a follow up album in the 2019. "We hope to achieve the most that we can and continue to be proud of what we put forward through each and every song, said Amy. Each song is a learning experience. We continue to push and grow together as a group and will continue to keep pushing each other to make the nest music that we possibly can together." Stephanie said, "I would like to improve making a second album, learning new things and try to spread our music wider."
Ashes Arise is not to be overlooked because of gender and the woman who create the music here have plenty of ability and talent that will make you forget about this. "Our project shows that females have their place in metal music and you can make any kind of project you want, there is no limit, said Stephanie. Concerning the place of women in rock bands, there should be no difference with men. People should just focus on the quality of music. Maybe there would be less comments like - It’s not so bad for a girl ! » or remarks on how a female singer is dressed or on her physical look if women were more present in music. There is place for women, they should invest more in arts in general. I heard about a report named 'Inclusion in the Recording Studio' Gender and Race/Ethnicity of Artists, Songwriters & Producers across 600 Popular Songs from 2012-2017 saying that women make 22% of artists, 12% of songwriters, and a mere 2% of producers." Amy added, "That we live in different countries and that our singers main language isn’t English! However it doesn’t deter them from being able to sing the lyrics! All Female rock bands are becoming more prevalent now then when I was first more involved in the scene back in early 2000. Girls are making a mark in this style and I’m in love with it!"
"My inspiration is my will to better myself always, said Amy. It’s always a goal of mine to keep moving forward and having something that brings you peace. Music is that for me. It’s my home my solitude. My happiness."
"I always wanted to compose songs, said Stephanie. When I started, I had only the possibility to record something on a little tape recorder playing guitar alone with the metronome 😂 now with very good softwares on the computer, it’s much more easy to compose a whole album, you can do any kind of instruments ! The inspiration I find now comes from the bands I like to listen to these days : Soilwork, Jinjer, Carcass, Beyond Creation... and the musical culture I acquired since a long time. I regularly go to see many shows, I can’t count the number of bands I have seen ! my music tastes changed with time as well as my way to compose music changed with experience".
