The Death Valley Girls appeared on the scene in Los Angeles in 2013 when Hole drummer Patty Schemel and her brother Larry joined forces with vocalist Bonnie Bloomgarden, and bass player Rachel Orosco. After releasing their debut album Street Venom in 2014 Patty decided to leave the group and was replaced by Laura Kelsey. In 2016, they released their latest studio album, Glow in the Dark again on Burger Records.
They are a garage rock band that deliver sounds they have described as “California doom boogie” that echo from a new dimension of sound including psych-pop, proto-metal, and garage rock that is hypnotic and opens the mind to plenty of grooves to shake your senses with influences such as the Cramps, Link Wray, Bikini Kill and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Get ready for a fistfull of psyche soaked blood drenched sounds that create a mind blowing experience in music.
The Death Valley Girls are taking their music out on the road in 2018 as they join forces with L7—another band who rock will begin a world tour in April. A must see even as shows are selling out fast and you had better get yours before its too late! “It means a lot to us to have such an killer and influential rock n' roll band take us on the road, said Bloomingdale. They have never wavered in what they do and are back again as good or better than before, honored to be the support band on this tour.
What are the Death Valley Girls about? Music from outer space, aliens, UFO’s, the afterlife? Starting a new revolution? Utilizing gang mentality? Everyone has to be in a gang? “Nothing, other than the music, if there are any messages it's in the music, some people are on different wavelengths, some individuals will get unique information, we have met them on tour and they relay back to us a lot of paranormal & psychic experiences they've had related to our music , no joke! Said Bloomgarden. But, insists “Everything, music is everything, not just ours. If you listen to an artist like Roky Erickson, he's a messenger, a teacher, so is Iggy Pop & David Bowie, it’s an ongoing revolution, it never stops, it's religion, it's life & death, everything!!” We're fun and dead serious about having a good time and want people who come to a show to have a good time too, dance, drink etc..
Their mission? “Turn people on to and tuned into rock and roll.”
They draw upon their ‘gang mentality” with the quote "everybody's got to be in a gang,' and attitude from the 70’s film says Bloomgarden. “It's from a 70's exploitation film called "Switchblade Sister's" directed by Jack Hill, it was the slogan of the gang in the movie The Jezebels, it's basically just about friendship and not having to feel alone, it has nothing to do with being in a clique or even a "gang", it's about knowing your buddy has your back and you can trust them with anything if you need help.”
TheDVGs have also been getting plenty of attention worldwide and called special from the likes of legendary rocker Iggy Pop. “He's played us a few time on his BBC radio show "Iggy Confidential” and said "Death Valley Girls are a gift to the world!" It means everything to us to have a hero and inspiration not only acknowledge us but like the music, a feeling of validation in some ways, whenever we feel down we always remember Iggy likes us!”
So, What does it take to understand the DVGs? “Drugs ... kidding! There are good and bad drugs just like everything else, I think our point of view is life is short, a lot of life is misery and sadness so we could only hope we bring some positivity and fun into people's lives, whatever little that is!”
So next time you think you saw a UFO…it could be the Death Valley Girls beaming their sounds to the world and beyond! For those who are stuck here on the planet Earth, tune them in, check them out on Youtube and on their Facebook pages and join their revolution! Turn it up to 11...It’s real and it will rock your world…or you out of this world!!
