DOLL SKIN
IN YOUR FACE
WITH THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE LAND
Doll Skin are no ordinary group of teenage girls but have a mission to rock the music world if not change it--make it better. In addition to multi-colored hair they play with a blazing color of sound that will leave an impression on all who get the opportunity to hear them. They have been moving fast and achieving success most bands only dream about. The girls met at the Scottsdale School of Rock in 2013 where they made their first mark by competing in the Rock Revelation Battle of the bands also had the fortune of impressing Megadeth bassist Dave Elfeson who was one of the judges. Since then they have been creating waves in the local and regional music scenes and are out to take on the world.
Doll Skin are from Phoenix, Arizona, and includes vocalist Sydney Dolezal, guitarist Alex Snowden, bassist Nicole Rich and drummer Meghan Herring. They have been unleashing a plethora of sonic energy that has been attracting fans, media, and awards and shows with the likes of Social Distortion, The Dead Kennedys, Green Jello, D.R.I. and more. On January 1st, 2017, Stone Chrome Radio & TV announced that Doll Skin won 2016's listener's choice award for "Favorite Female Fronted Band. This is in addition to being named the breakout band of the year for 2016.
"Our goal has always been to inspire and make music that makes people feel something. Knowing that people love our music is an honor in itself," said Meghan Herring. "We want to convey confidence and fearlessness in our music. We love inspiring all our fans, but it really hits home when a girl comes up to us and tells us how we've made her feel like she can do anything. That makes us feel so amazing when we inspire young girls."
For Herring music has always been a part of her life growing up provided inspiration. "My parents raised me on rock music. My mom made friends with people who were in the Tempe Music Scene. As a young girl I would hang out at local musicians' houses. My mom's closest friends at the time had a drumset sitting at their house. I would hover around it, completely fascinated. My parents' friends took me to a drum lesson on time and the teacher said I was a natural. After years of lessons with two incredible teachers (Jason Kay, and Chad Martin at the School of Rock), and a few teaching myself, I considered myself obsessed. School of Rock showed me every style there was to rock music. Punk rock stood out to all of ladies the most. We fell in love."
You can feel that not only do Doll Skin have a great grasp of making solid music but also have a solid grasp on rock history and feel getting Runaways comparisons an honor. "We know who The Runaways are! We get compared to them at every single interview we get. It's totally awesome. They opened the doors for ladies everywhere. They showed us how badass women are, and how they totally can dominate the music industry."
Doll Skin are a band not to overlook by age or gender as they play solid rock and roll that will leave you speachless. This is the real thing. If anything gets overlooked says Herring, "Talent. For some reason it's a surprise to a lot of people. Before almost EVERY SHOW on tour, we hear comments from the crowd while we're setting up along the lines of confusion and doubt. We get judgmental looks as well. It's not like we don't expect it though. We blow their heads off as soon as we start playing. The doubters' expressions change instantly. It's hilarious."
David Ellefson is our biggest fan. From out first gig ever he has shown his never ending support. He has done worlds of good for Doll Skin. He's spent so much of his time and money on my silly old band. He's helped us create art when we need help on some rough spots and he's offered advice you would never find anywhere else. He's changed the game for us. We are so grateful. David saw it in us. To him it means we have that star quality, talent, and a tight show to get it done. I can't compare DS to other bands because I have so many bands that I worship. But hey...I'll gladly take David's word!
"I first saw Doll Skin at a local high school talent show, which was their very first show ever," Ellefson said. "They came onstage as a team and looked & played like a real group. As much as I love great musicians, what I really love is great bands because that camaraderie translates to the audience. It's what makes us feel like we wished we were the ones on the stage leading the masses to their happy place together."
Doll Skin released their first EP In Your Face and then released it as a full length. Both received positive response and assured the band of their work and dedication to the band, said Herring. "We are all equally dedicated 100%. Doll Skin is our number one priority. We want to turn this into a career, so it's all or nothing. The band has changed so much from day 1. That means personally and as musicians. With all the writing, recording, and touring, our stage show has changed dramatically. Our talent has been affected as we learn how to become better musicians every day. We've conquered some of our biggest fears together. It's really a triumph."
Not only professional but mature and total dedication is a trademark of Doll Skin. Getting positive response to their original recordings only added to their confidence and assurance to the band. "About "In Your Face" and "In Your Face (Again)"? Both of them were total shots in the dark. I knew I was nervous what the world would think of them. Don't get me wrong. I loooved what we wrote. It was super fun to play. But it's a whole different monster when you release it to the public. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive. We were all shocked."
Doll Skin are jumping into the year with excitement and for great reason. New recordings, NAMM, and plenty of touring ahead. What more can a band ask for? "2017 is going to be a big year for us. NAMM is already confirmed. It's going to be our second year in a row there and we are SO STOKED. We have some big shows planned (that we cannot announce yet). Also, THE NEXT RECORD! We're so excited. Recording is going to be taking place in LA with Evan Rodaniche of Cage9 over these next few months. We are all reallyyyy excited about getting these songs in the studio some more! We can't reveal too much. But this is going to be a little bit of an angrier album. We're showing our fangs quite a bit. We have a name picked out for the album already and it's been driving us to write some killer tunes. We have some surprises in store as well. You'll see. Keep your eye out for mid 2017."
Herring said of the new release, "Without giving away too much, the title alone inspired us to come up with lots of awesome topics for songs, all while sticking to the theme of the album title. We were all talking like..."Is this going to be a concept album?". Not exactly. The title implies the theme, but we stray outside the circle at times. This album was inspired by a few key movies that all had one common character, and a slam poem that defined that character. It'll come together for everyone once it's released."
