STAR AND DAGGER

ROCK & ROLL THAT SHAKES SOME ASS

It all happened one night when friends Sean Yseult and Dava She Wolf were drinking with Lenny Kaye late into the night.  He told them that the two were meant to be in a band together and decided that it was a good idea and found Von Hesseling for vocals and added Dustin Crops of Jesus Christ Superfly on the drums.  The mix is a whiskey soaked brand of Southern Rock and Roll with plenty of intense guitar sounds that is Black Sabbath with the buzz of blues hard rock and roll and snarling vocals that gets compared to Cherie Currie  that power up the deep-fried voltage as the sound digs into your skin.  Von Hesseling said, “Yes, Sean and Dava were at a party in NYC when Lenny Kaye decreed they should start a band. He created a monster.”  Dava said, “Both Sean and I have the privilege of knowing Lenny, he is a living guitar deity, a poet and a just an all-around beautiful individual. If it wasn't for Lenny running into us at Bowery Electric on that fateful night and having an epiphany about us starting a band, I wouldn't be answering these questions right now.”

Rock and Roll lives and breathes and shakes its ass!” says Von Hesseling, of Star & Dagger.  This is NO Valley of the Dolls as the women point out that the band includes Crops on drums.  The sound, however, is heavy blues which goes back to the raw sound of that known in the 70’s, says Dava. “We have a lot of 70's influences in our music. It was a good female archetype, 3 women posing together on a bed looking towards something off camera. It fit the album title well. The cat Mr.Crowley was rescued from the street and he joined in for a couple of shots, including the one that made the cover. I don't know if you've ever seen Valley Of The Dolls but it's a scream. The back cover is a game board with the cautionary sign-off "Be Careful What You Wish For" just before making it home free, which sums up that movie. There is a definite 70's hard rock sound in our production. I like the guitar tones of that era and that's the attitude I try to evoke in my playing as well. The title track Tomorrowland Blues is about being gypped by the future. Dreams are snuffed out.”

Star & Dagger released Tomorrowland Blues on July 23rd and was recorded at the  Joshua Tree  with a tour to follow August 1st.  The album was produced by Ethan Allen and Dave Catching and released on Cauldron 333/Megaforce.  The cover photo of the album is a take-off on the photo for Valley of The Dolls. “The new release, Tomorrowland Blues, is a culmination of our first writings and what we've been playing live, Von Hesseling said. It features heavy hitters like, End of Days and In My Blood, as well as bluesier material such as Money and Freak Train.”

“We actually wrote 5 songs and recorded them in record time in the first few months of being together. We rounded out another 5 and went back to Joshua Tree to record again about 6 months later. We get down to business! Then we eat and drink like Romans once we are done”, said Von Hesseling.  Dava said, “A lot of great times hanging out, drinking, storytelling and a fair bit of mystery and adventure since no one really knew how or where this was gonna go. Sean just started writing riffs and flipped them to me, I added stuff and sent it back to her and then Von did her vocal lines and we were blown away, so they became full-fledged demos. Whenever we all were in the same city we'd have a session or two to flesh stuff out a little more. Individually and collectively the musical ideas surfacing between the three of us came together pretty seamlessly. The first five songs we wrote were recorded at Hicksville Studios in Joshua Tree run by our friend, Morgan Higby Night. I believe we were the first band to ever record there, the vibe and setting could not have been more perfect. Our co-producer Ethan Allen who also engineered and mixed the album got the best out of us and our drummer at the time, Dustin Crops did a really great job. Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal) was hanging out at Hicksville and liked what he heard so we did the next five songs at Rancho de la Luna with Dave co-producing. So to concisely answer the question, the time and energy of some incredibly talented people went into the making of Tomorrowland Blues. I should mention that J. Yuenger also mastered the album. After recording this album we worked with J. on a three song vinyl release (the very first thing of ours ever put out) on the boutique label Last Hurrah Records. One of those songs being "In My Blood" from the sessions at Hicksville. All in all a great experience.”

As for inspiration and attitude, “B movies, horror, Kubrick, 60s board games, were inspired by everything groovy. It works with our sound and definitely influences our visuals. Videos, artwork, merchandise, you name it. The music that Sean and Dava come up with, it’s so atmospheric; it's like watching a movie in my head. Dava She Wolf writes most of our lyrics and they're so cryptic. I love delivering her lines.”

The first video release “Your Momma Was a Grifter” is done in Black & White Russ Meyer style which pays tribute to the cult classic Faster Pussycat Die Die!!.  “We all have a soft spot in our hearts for Russ Meyer films. And when you're in a beautiful desert like Joshua Tree you can't help but to dress up like Tura Santana and stomp around in your high heeled boots.”

Willie Nelson said it best, said Dava,  "The life I love is making music with my friends..." especially when one of your friends is the heaviest bass player on the fuckin planet and the other sings like a siren in possession of the sickest pipes ever, damn straight I can't wait to get on the road again! But I'll always prefer a fancy hotel with room service to some lo-fi passenger van, I ain't gonna lie.

Star & Dagger look forward  to hitting the road and will be playing the Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas prior to Halloween October 24-27th.

Keep up with the band on Facebook as they keep pace with their activities and news using social media and as for getting their music, Von Hesseling  says, “you can download our music on Amazon, but please try and catch us live as well. We put on a party!”
