MUMBLE RUMBLE

MUMBLE RUMBLE DELIVER HONEST MUSIC FROM THE SOUL

Mumble Rumble are not just another alternative rock band ready to deliver a new album.  They have consistently followed a deep passion that has fueled their success as a band for 25 years and are considered the pioneers of female rock in Italy where they have been a mainstay for so long with three album releases, winners of the Arezzowave Festival (1992) which is the most prestigious Italian rock competition which they are the only female band to have won, been in some of the most prominent rock festivals in Europe, been on television and included in books, as well as toured with the likes of Motorhead, Fugazi, the Lunachicks, NoFX, Moving Targets and FFF.  Formed in 1990 the band includes Simona De Sanctis on vocals, Tiziana Govoni on guitar, Cristina Atzori on drums and Giulia Bottazzi on bass.  Their music can be described as rock-core-emo-noise-punk-metal-experimentation.  The band has always been about creating freely their music with an open mind and spirit that has opened the door to their diverse sound of music that will hook you and take you to different destinations depending on the spirit of the song.  While many years have passed and the music scene has changed with many bands coming and going, Mumble Rumble have been a band to follow and lead the way for not only female bands but all bands that look to make their mark in the alternative rock music scene.

.

We would like people to know how much we love what we do and how much we believe it necessary to be honest. Honesty means integrity, the will to defend our work, beyond fashions and half-measures to access to “commercial”. Italy has big limits in this sense, because who makes music like ours hasn't room or visibility. There is a series of requisites even only for a radio passage! We think that more musical culture is necessary in our country and we don't refer only to rock music, but to all that music which can't reach the public because it is not “pop” enough, not easily-remembered and “different”.

Our aim is playing to follow the evolution of our music. Our pieces come from improvisations; ourselves don't know what will happen from the merge of our instruments when we begin working. Everything depends on emotional contingent moods, stages of life which we go through and different incentives which we are always ready to receive. A key to understand if people like our music more or less doesn't exist. Simply it is not a problem for us! We always try to start from what we like and satisfy us.

Mumble Rumble having started back in 1990 were coming out when the Riot Grrrl movement his the Northwest United States and have been compared to being out of that movement but differ from this.  ^ we had to live together with the stereotype of the Riot Grrrl, which others have “sticked” on us since our beginnings. We like the idea of a sort of “female rebellion” but we think the 90s phenomenon of the Riot was not so valid at a musical level and we also think it has not left any “mark”. Unfortunately nowadays many bands love it, but our references are others. Clearly, if we speak about the 90s, we can't do without instancing the “grunge” and all the bands which enliven the musical scene in Seattle. Nowadays everything has changed definitively! There is no longer the ferment enlivening the 90s. It seems people have no more interested in music. There is less flow of people to concerts, few records are sold and the way of using and enjoying music has changed.

Besides, the economic crisis doesn't help: the places have less money as well and organize fewer concerts. The biggest counterblow is for the bands like ours, not at the beginnings, not a cover group, but not even a renowned band!

Sometimes our biggest obstacle has probably been our greatest advantage: the fact that we are a female group! We are very often relegated exclusively to female rock festivals or “pink” evenings. Instead we think we are a musical band beyond every sexist classification. Being women is important surely! We are always in the front line when we have to defend women's questions, to manifest against violence and to assert the right of equality! We try to do it through the texts of the songs too; for instance “Stupro”(Rape) or the latest “ This empty heart” which is also the sound track of a medium-length on feminicide.  Nevertheless, when we play we want to be considered as musicians and that's all!

We most dislike when people think of us as a scantily productive band! Unfortunately, because our private lives, we have a rather slow rate of work. In some reviews on our latest record we have been accused of scanty musical production and this could seem true as only three records have come out in 25 years (the fourth one is coming out)!!

Really we have so much material that we could have at least ten records to launch! The problem is that our singer doesn't live in the same town as ours and we can't often meet. Consequently, we have little time to define and arrange pieces. Our creative vein has never been on crisis, indeed it is our true strength and it is what lets us go on.

As regards our successes, the best years were obviously the beginnings in the 90s, when the musical ferment in Italy and in Boulogne in particular was still lively and strong.

Nowadays unfortunately, both the clubs and places where it was possibly to play and listen to indie music, and the groups enlivening the rock scene at that time don't exist anymore or have decreased sensibly. Clearly, the most important stages have been our records which   every time have produced a change and a significant musical evolution.

Notwithstanding the difficulties, we are still stimulated by the longing to play and above all to experiment. We are not interested in fashions. We have shown it widely in year out, going on making “our music”. This is very important and we think it is the distinctive sign of the MUMBLE RUMBLE. Having been, in a sense, pioneers in Italy and being still here, makes us proud and feels as the “unshakable fighters” of music which is still holding out.
