THE ROSALYNS
A DIFFERENT ERA OF MUSIC....
Get ready to jump in a time machine and come out back in 1966. Yeah 53 years ago! It was a time many consider to be one of the greatest years of music ever. Now it is 2019 and you can taste the vibe and music of that year with the Rosalyns who deliver music of a different era and do it with a new feel and energy that you need to experience and take yourself back and shake your rock and roll senses with.
The Rosalyns feature and all star cast of musicians--and are going to rock your world with an awesome blend of music that is garage rock, psychedelic, 60’s punk.
The band formed in 2013 and include Amy Gore (guitar, vocals) who founded the Gore Gore Girls out of Detroit; Birdy Bardot (organ, vocals, guitar) is a successful solo vocalist and part of The Redwoods Collective. Anja Stax (bass, vocals) also member of the Loons. Their records and live performances have commanded the attention of fans for over twenty years. Prior, in 1991 she co-founded the all-girl band Thee Cherylinas (Germany) and then moved to London in 1994 to join The Diaboliks. Lety Beers (drums) also lays down the drums for The Schizophonics from San Diego Their frenzied live performances tap into the same unstoppable combination of rock ‘n’ roll energy and showmanship that fueled the MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom. Lori Sokolowski (guitar, vocals) is the drummer/singer of San Diego based duo Gloomsday. Lori, originally from Milwaukee, has been playing and recording in several bands over the last 7 years and is no stranger on the local music scene. She is also seen playing guitar for the post-punk band Gateway Hugs and was part of the now defunct San Diego All Girl Punk band “Ladyparts”, playing bass. She is also a mentor and organizer at San Diego's " Ladies (and girls) Rock Camps" a nonprofit organization to empower girls through music.
“We are a 5 piece band playing 60s Rock'n'Roll. The Rosalyns feature some of the most talented female musicians on the scene, united to play the sounds of the original ‘60s Girls in the Garage and Sixties Punk tunes such as the Pleasure Seekers, She, The Debutantes and more. All the members have racked up years of stage and studio time with other bands.”
The Rosalyns formed in 2013 to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of Ugly Thins Magazine and have been one of the only bands representing the era of music they do so well. “We initially formed 6 years ago. We were celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Ugly Things Magazine (a publication by my husband Mike Stax) with a three day festival, inviting a lot of our favorite bands and friends to play and take part in the festivities. I thought it would be a good idea to have a girl band representing all those 60s girl garage tunes we had been covering in the magazine. So I approached various female musicians in town with the idea and the Rosalyns started. We all became good friends, had a lot of fun and decided to keep the band going.”
“It's pretty much all mid sixties garage and freakbeat with a few 70s punk numbers mixed in. The direction came from the initial idea plus this is the music and scene I have been ingrained in for many years. Ultimately we pick songs which we love and are a good fit for the band as well as get people dancing. Is there any better era for music?”
It was a special era of music and one that drives a special vibe to for the Rosalyns. “Exciting, raw, energetic.....in my opinion it's the best music there is. To me, 1966 was probably one of the most creative years for bands and music in general. A great benchmark year for a lot of things creatively speaking. I am sure many people would not agree but just listen to some of those amazing albums by Love, 13th Floor Elevators, MC5, Pretty Things, Small Faces....the list is endless.”
The band has plenty of things in the works as well. “We previously released an EP through UT Records. We just finished recording an album which will be released (on vinyl) on Pig Baby Records in November. A great mix of all our favorite tunes in our live set. We are also planning some shows to promote the LP. Nothing confirmed yet but watch this space.”
So get ready to experience the Rosalyns as they promise it to be a fun dance party with a lot of energy and good songs. You can find them on Facebook and through Pig Baby Records. And Anja said, “Have fun, be kind and tolerant and long live rock’n’roll!”
You can get the message loud and clear so tune in to The Rosalyns and experience their hot garage sounds of the 60’s. It’s my recommendation and one you need to take!
