JET WILLIAMS SHREDS FOR LIFE AND A MIRACLE...
LIPSTICK
Jet Williams -- Cleveland’s Own Shred Mistress
Makes rock history in Cleveland, overcomes death…and finds love
Yvette “Jet” Williams has had an extraordinary life to say the least. In 2003 while living in Texas was struck in the head by lightning and literally left this world. She died. She was somehow revived and lived to talk about it. Prior to her life changing event that could only be one in a million to survive—she was creating lightning on the lead guitar as a true shred-mistress and lead vocalist throughout Cleveland most notably with the all-female band Lipstick. Lipstick debuted their first single, "I Want to Be With You Tonight." The single went to 14 on Clevelands National Radio Station WMMS. It also hit 86 on the WMMS Hot List for the year. The "B" side called "Put n Bay," was a promo hit for the island of Put n Bay. Both songs, written by Yvette "Jet" Williams, were recorded at Kopperhead Studios and produced by Mark Avsec. Avsec was the former member of Wild Cherry, and founder and former member of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, and writer of the single, "She Don't Know Me", for BonJovi which launched his career.
After Lipstick, Williams relocated to Los Angeles and continued to perform with several more bands and have a successful career in music.
After the lightning strike, Williams moved to Florida and after divorcing her husband went to Portugal where she discovered her artistic side with Cork and created her own business in cork design. Then, another big turn of events happened for Williams. The producer of her Lipstick LP, Mark Avsec, called out of the blue to visit for lunch because he had business in the Tampa area to attend to. The result has been a romance that she has not looked back from and means a return to Ohio. It may also mean a possible Lipstick reunion. I about passed out because I had a terrible massive crush on him when we were in the studio back in the day and I was young and he was young and he was about 30 years old back then and I had a huge crush on him because he was the big producer going in the studio, and I never told him and all of the girls in the band knew what a huge crush I had on him. I wrote a song about it and we used to play the song that I wrote about it. We got together and had dinner and have been together ever since! I am moving back to Cleveland to be with him.d your own text and edit me. I’m a great place for you to tell a story and let your users know a little more about you.
CLEVELAND PIONEER AS FEMALE SHRED MISTRESS
Lipstick opened for many different artist including "Wild Horses, The Box Tops, The Godz, Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, and Black Oak Arkansas." After the hit single, Lipstick was offered a contract by Atlantic Records, but turned down the offer due to the fact not all of the members agreed to tour as required by the contract. Other offers followed but the band did not accept any and eventually went their separate ways.
Williams is originally from Akron and graduated from Jackson High School. She decided to move to Cleveland after graduating so that she could pursue music and follow her real passion of guitar and rock and roll.
I did it after High School to be in the music scene. I went to Akron University and then I went up to Cleveland. I pursued a Sociological Degree there and I would sneak and take music classes but my mother didn’t like that idea! LOL So I would try and sneak and take some music classes and then got so involved in the music scene and it looked like maybe some good things were going to happen and I didn’t finish at Akron U. I finished at the University of North Texas. (years later)
Lipstick came together in the early 1980’s when finding an all-female rock band was like finding a needle in a haystack. “Well, Mitch Karczewski (Spotlight Talent) found out about us and I believe if I remember when he met me he had a clothing store and I believe she worked for him and he discovered that she played and he loved one of the songs she had written in high school and he was like I want to get in the business and I want to have an all-girl band, so they started looking for other girls to play and they found me and one by one they got us and they eventually came upon me and I had already been in the scene for several years playing almost every night. I played guitar and keyboards and I had played with several bands. I played with Loose Change and The Cats and Claudia which was an all-girl night club band, I played with Cheshire Cat and Hydra and I wanted to be in an all-girl band too and I joined Claudia and they were a night club band and they were worn out and were tired and wanted to come off the road so it was like I still want to be in an all-girl band so I was looking around and I saw that Mitch and Donna were looking for girls so I met up with them and the rest is history. LOL
We got stuck in the basement for like a year because we couldn’t find a drummer. There weren’t girls playing drums back then. Fortunately we were in Cleveland and Cleveland has tons of musicians because of all the culture in Cleveland. If we had been in some other little town and in some other state I don’t think we would have ever found a drummer. Because of Cleveland’s culture and history in music there were a couple of girls and we found someone. We finally found somebody so we would be in the basement for like a year and play with a drum machine click track and that is how we played. We would practice all the time and play with that click track. We came out as a cover band. Of course I was not going to accept that I was in a cover band so I made sure I changed that as fast as I could and we became an all original act pretty quickly—I would say within a year. We would play all originals and what was so funny bands back then you couldn’t play the clubs as an all original band, you had to play covers so that people would come and drink and we were Lipstick and we became the Sweethearts we were able to play in the clubs and play our own music all night long. We were the only band that could get away with that. People loved our music so they didn’t care.
