NYLON PINK PUSH THE BOUNDARIES...

By Bill Samaras

LA Weekly has called Nylon Pink one of Los Angele’ss sexiest, glitziest bands.  They were picked as the 2011 Artist on the Verge by ReverbNation and nominated for Pop Artist of the Year by the LA Music Awards.  They are one of the hottest bands around with over 10 million page views on Myspace and 470,000 friends.  The pop punk band from Los Angeles reside in Hollywood and are off to take America by storm with their current tour.

Nylon Pink are the only All-Asian, all female band in the United States and not only deliver great music but offer a lifestyle to their fans with a jewelry and clothing line which is inspired by their music and lyrics called Hello Drama Designs.

The band was formed in 2007 by lead vocalist Kaila Yu and bassist Katt Lee. They added Kiki Wongo on guitar, Jamie Scoles on drums and Yuki Ito on keyboards to round out the group.

“I was thinking about our music and our image is that we have another thing that people cant really put it into a type of genre, said Yu, is that we have a lot of different influences.  I grew up listening to a lot of heavy metal and the other girls were listening to other types of music and have more like hip hop influence, so we kind of reflect on all of our influences to reflect on our image as well so it is kind of like it is kind of cool because we can each sort of pick out the different influences that we have in our image, while at the same time I would not subjugate us as anything specific.”

Nylon Pink also are an inspiration to young girls who might not only take up playing music but also delve into fashion as the band has a fashion of jewelry and clothing.

“We are definitely an inspiration for young girls because you don’t see a lot of girls in bands playing drums and instruments rocking out, you know, we are definitely and specifically in the rock music industry there are not a lot of girls, it is male dominated, and I feel with us being in that and on top of that being Asian American we are different and want to influence young girls whether it is music or entertainment, fashion or any other industry, so  yes.”

We are more ourselves and probably not like normal, as in fashion for example, we all dress kind of loud and crazy, but that is just the way we are.  That is how we normally dress when we go out.  People think we are really crazy but that is how we are and always have been.  It is definitely a life style.

I think that they might overlook that we are really musically talented, and might look at our image and expect a little less.

I think that is a good thing too because we are practicing like every single day and going to all of these events and meeting people and networking and we work our butt off but that makes us work even harder.  We have to work way harder than the next band, you know?
