GIRLIE HELL
ROCK CHICKS THAT RULE & ROCK HARD
Get ready for Girlie Hell direct from Goiania, Goias, Brazil. These girls are ready to fill your ears with a bold and brash sound filled with lots of hard riffs and distortion. The girls formed in 2007 and released their debut EP, Shake Your Ass the following year and followed it up with a full LP, Get Hard in 2012 produced by Gustavo Vazquez and Luis Maldonalle. The band includes Bullas Attekita – vocals & guitar; Júlia Stoppa - guitar; Carol Pasquali - drums; and Joyce Guerra - bass. With influences such as L7, Kittie, Crucified Barbara, Danko Jones, The Donnas, AC/DC, Girlschool, Foo Fighters, Metallica and others, they create a power packed sound that is loaded with energy and hard hitting action drawing attention wherever they play.
“We’re an all-female band from Brazil, passionate about rock and we hope we can inspire more and more girls to know how to play an instrument and have their own band, said Attekita.
The four of us were always involved with music since we were kids.
Influenced by powerful women/bands like Joan Jett, Brody Dalle, L7, Kittie, Alanis Morissette, Roxette, Crucified Barbara and so many others, we decided to use the power of music to make some difference, to confront the prejudice and to show other girls and women that we must fight for what we love. Of course that in the very beginning we were so young… we just wanted to play and have fun. hahahahahaha but all that responsibility came right away after we released our first album.”
The lineup came together naturally, Attekita said. “Actually, that was a very natural thing. As boys want to have fun with their boy-friends, we wanted to have fun with our girl-friends. It wasn’t a scam to do a planned evil thing. It just happened. Personally, I’ve started playing flute when I was 3 just as a way do fill my day, because my mom and dad worked all day and didn’t want me at home, doing nothing. From the very first day at that little music school in a very small city in the countryside, I felt that I loved what I was doing. Since then I’ve never stopped playing. I’d only tried the drums when I was 12, after trying piano and guitar, and I was very, very sure that was my thing. And here I am!”
As for style of music, they point to their influences and once again, a natural flow and vibe. ”We didn’t actually ‘chose’ a style. It kind of flows in us. That’s why, sometimes, you listen to a very dramatic song and a ‘metal/rock’n roll’ high tempo right after. Our music is our feeling and it changes just like it.”
Just as the internet has contributed to bands worldwide getting exposure, it can also be seen as an obstacle to success. ”I think that a big obstacle is to create a contrast among other bands. Because today the Internet is the main media to every band show their work. And the Internet is so democratic, unlike TV. People choose what they wantto see, and there are so many bands showing their work that makes creating a contrast very challenging. There are a lot of people that find us on YouTube that think we play some kind of melody metal, because that is what most female ‘rock’ singers do. That’s the most common misunderstanding we’ve been through.” She added, “There are some people who think that all female bands can’t play as hard and as good as men. I think they should see more all female band’s concerts.”
”Mainly, I think, is the ‘does girls can do it? Can they really play rock’n roll?’. We hear that a lot and we kind of got used to it. But we always question why. People usually can’t explain why they think like that. That’s when we realize it’s a cultural thought. People think it without knowingwhy. And that’s our role, to make people think why do they have/feel prejudice against women, why do they think someone can’t do something because of her/his gender.
"We use our music to express ourselves, our feelings and things we go through life. We do it for ourselves, as a way to channel our energy, to turn it into something we like. And as things go, we find out that more people feel like us and that’s how the connection with fans happen."
"Get Hard!’ is our first album and it was a dream coming true. It was an unforgettable experience, our first immersion in a studio to record eleven tracks. The recording routine is incredible and always unique. By that time we were too young and had no experience in recording, which, of course, led us to some mistakes. But everything is part of our career and now we use the knowledge that mistakes gave us in our behalf."
"The idea behind ‘Get Hard!’ was to show people that we were engaged with the band, that we were serious about it and we want our chance to prove ourselves on stage. Basically we want to run over everyone with that car! (from the cover) hahahahahaha!"
Girlie Hell are working on new material in 2016. “We’re currently producing a new album and recording a unplugged DVD. But before all that we have already done a new single which should be released in March. We’ll release a new single (and its video) in March (still don’t have a
specific date) and we intend to release the Unplugged DVD AND the new album this year. I hope we have time for that.”
"The most important thing is that we are now fighting together for the same ideal, chasing the same objectives, aiming for the same target. We want to make some difference, to inspire other girls to get up and take control of their lives. We won’t stop until we know we’ve made it. For now, our goals are to finish and release our next projects (there are a lot to come) and we’re trying to arrange our first international tour."
Grilie Hell are one band that not only packs a solid punch with great hard rock edges but with solid musicians creating a intense wall of sound to back it up. Each member can play and do it in any world you choose--mans, women, rock and roll. "I would sum it up as: we’re here to kick some ass and to support everyone who have the guts to have a band and to create their own music."
Girlie Hell promises plenty of energy at a live show and every once of passion that they have inside their soul for a maximum dose of rock and roll. “Energy and engagement. It doesn’t matter if the show is for 10 or 10,000 people, if we had time to sleep, to eat… we’ll get on the stage and give everything we’ve got to show people the real energy and power of our music.”
