THE ANTI-QUEENS
THE ANTI-QUEENS DELIVER DIY ATTITUDE
The Anti-Queens are here to pump your ears with plenty of raw indie sounds that will quickly hook your inner senses with a fresh beat to their music that mixes grunge, rock and punk with a DIY attitude.
The band are from Toronto, Canada and include Emily Bones on lead vocals & guitar, Mary Deth on bass and Lindsay Bird pounding the drums. Their song "Girl Who Stole the Sun" was featured on the season finale of hit online series "Out with Dad" (www.outwithdad.com)
They take their name from a twist on Anti-King, which dates back to a term from the medieval times. “Anti-King” dates back to the beginning of the 15th century when a man could declare himself or be elected as King. They were generally not born into royalty but had a great support team behind them to succeed. When I discovered that meaning, it was apparent that there must have been a few Anti-Queens in history as well. If not, that’s where we come in!”
“We think that it’s important for people to know that we are a very DIY and independent band. We work hard, we love music, and we just want to share it and be badass with people! We are 6 tits with instruments. Vocals, guitar, bass, drums and no magic synth wand.”
The Anti-Queens released their debut EP “Grow Up Stay Young”in 2012 and already plan on writing their next album. “We started recording the EP about a year ago to date (2012-2013) and released it June 30th. All 6 songs were written by me (Emily Bones) and bass player, Mary Deth. We collaborated with our super rad producer Ian Blackwood who helped to structure our sporadically creative ideas. Each song is fairly different from the other but I would say the two songs worth noting would be “Cowards in the Castle” and “The Famous Monster” Both is very contrasting to each other, and very haunting in their own ways. Of course, “Fixerupper” is our most crowd-involved song when we play it live. And if you listen past the end of that track, there is a little hidden message.”
“We are working on songwriting for the next album. We are having thoughts of a full-length record with heavier riffs and vocals, more musically complex with explicit lyrics and for it to challenge us on a whole other level. We are also looking to book shows out of the city and hopefully schedule a tour for the summer of 2014.”
The Anti-Queens have been compared with the Runaways, also starting off as teenage rockers. “We get compared to The Runaways a LOT which is amazing. I think it was because they were a young and all female band with similar a similar musical style to ours, but also their visual appeal of matching clothing and “we don’t give a fuck” attitude. Joan Jett definitely continues to influence our DIY methods, such as starting her own record label, Blackheart Records.”
The band is working hard to keep their name on the map and make a career out of music. “We hope for this band to become our career. We crave to travel the world with our music, and meet all the people we have been mailing to and getting to know online. The ultimate goal is to just never be home. We love being on the road, period.”
“I think people might overlook how hard we work outside of just being musicians. As I’m sure this goes for every other musician out there. Most times you must have a day job to maintain your dream job. It gets a bit hectic to balance those two sometimes. Also, starting out fairly young in the music industry can be challenging. With so many obstacles you’ll have to pass and so many mistakes you’ll learn from, it can be easy to be taken advantage of. People may assume that you do not have the experience and therefor will not take you seriously. We like to prove those people wrong. Because although we are a young and self-managed band, we have been around for over a decade and have grown through everything we have learned firsthand.”
While their EP will definitely get your attention, the real magic happens at Anti-Queens live performances. “Our live shows are pretty fearless. We are loud and vulgar, and really enjoy getting the audience involved whether it be singing the lyrics, or having them dance on stage with us. We like to keep our flies open, and throw our bras at peoples’ faces. Other than that, we are always really into the song we’re playing at the time. We like to head bang, play each other’s guitars and at times, do our synchronized dance moves.”
